The book Be-ikvot Mashiah (Gershom Scholem, In the Footsteps of the Messiah, 1944), still hunted by academics and collectors to this day, signifies the first attempt to redeem the texts of the fallen Messiah’s followers. This was a beginning that shaped the study of Jewish mysticism in the twentieth century, even if complete editions of key Sabbatian texts continue to await their redeemer. The current reissuing of this book, in 390 copies, is nothing less than a call to action to scholars and a cry for a textual redemption that has been delayed. | Professor Jonatan Meir serves as a faculty member in the Goldstein-Goren Department of Jewish Thought at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. He is a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and is the author of numerous studies on various forms of Jewish Literature and Jewish Mysticism.
